The Bonneville Salt Flats are about an hour and a half from Salt Lake City, UT and in my opinion, one of the coolest places to visit if you are in the area. It is nothing like I have ever seen before.
During many months of the year (non rainy season) you are able to drive your car on the salt flats, I recommend having a higher clearance vehicle if you decide to go far, my 4runner handled it pretty well, but some of the salt flats pile a little high in some areas.
During rainy months, and shorly after… the salt flats look kind of like a giant lake, cars aren’t allowed during this time, but the parking lot is a decent size and you are able to walk the area.
It was VERY windy when we went in May… but VERY hot since you are in the middle of nowhere with no shade.
We spent a little over an hour here, it was very cool, the dogs had a BLAST and we still talk about this trip often. It’s worth the hype. We were here on a Friday, and there were maybe 15 other cars there… the place is so big that you lose people quickly and it didn’t feel busy at all.
TIPS: Remember its Salt, not snow… and it does stick to your shoes and your dogs paws. I would bring towels for the car, some water to rinse your dog off… and maybe another pair of shoes. Its been about 5 months since I last visited the Salt Flats… I still have salt in the car. It gets everywhere and it seems to stick there… no matter how hard you scrub. Also, no matter how many times you tell your dog its not snow… they will likely try to keep tasting it and proving to you by their facial expressions that it is in fact, salt. :p
