Our Blind Boston Terrier

Chevy started losing her vision in 2019, but became fully blind in 2025. Here are a few things ive learned over the years that may be helpful to others.

  1. Picking her up to help her around the house actaully made things much worse. She has a decent map of the house, and picking her up to help her go up and down the staris caused confusion. I found it was better to let her stick her little paws out reaching for the stairs, and do it herself. I will say, she now has dementia, so her mapping is a bit haywire now. But I do think she still has an easier time if I just talk her through rooms rather than lifting her and *poof* she went from the back door to the kitchen on the other side of the house.
  2. Halos are an absolute MUST. Ill share my favorites. Know that these are affiliate links and I do make commission on them, at no cost to you. But these are products I genuinly love for Chevy.

So my opinions on the Muffins Halo, I find it a little sad its angel wings and a halo. But that aside, I think this one is great for outdoor use. Because its a harness style, it lets her play and be a bit more rugged with it, and it holds up well. You can also take the halo and wings off with velcro, and use the vest like a regular harness.

When Chevy is inside, I think its a bit hard for her to get comfortable because this is bulky, its probably not as comfortable to lay down in since it is a rough, canvas like fabric with no stretch. So for inside the house we use this:

This halo is kind of like a cone you use after your dog has surgery, or has a hot spot you don’t want them to chew. It’s made from foam, It has a strap to go around the body that keeps the halo the right direction. It seems to be more comfortable for chevy when she lounges around the house. She can sleep in it… and we can leave her alone in a room knowing she won’t wake up and smash her face.

The downside to this one… it feels very big for the size. So I do feel like she walks a little funny wearing it, because it bumps her legs when she walks.
